My experience with special educational needs

My work bridges lived experience, academic research and hands-on practice, offering support that is both compassionate and evidence-informed. I currently provide SEN support in a primary school, working with Key Stage 2 pupils through sensory circuits, SEMH nurture provision, one-to-one support and small group interventions to make learning engaging, accessible and confidence-building. I have over 15 years' experience supporting children and young people with additional needs across schools, early years, family services and community settings. My roles have included SEN Teaching Assistant, Youth Coach, Family Support Worker, SEN Advisor and online English Teacher. I hold a Degree in English Language and Literature and a Level 7 Master's Diploma in SEND, with exemplar-standard research on supporting autistic learners. I also developed a sensory regulation app and provide personalised online English tuition, helping children build confidence, literacy skills and a love of learning.

A bit about me

Hello, I'm Ruth, an SEN Teaching Assistant, English tutor and autism coach, passionate about helping neurodivergent children thrive. I'm also the author of a children's book celebrating the strengths that come with different thinking styles. My passion is rooted in lived experience. I'm mum to two amazing neurodivergent children: my son is autistic, and my daughter has dyspraxia, dyslexia and proprioceptive sensory challenges. Supporting them has shaped both my career and my belief that every child can flourish when their unique way of learning is understood. Having experience on both sides of the school gate, I've seen the difference genuine understanding makes. I'm known for building strong relationships, using multisensory approaches and embracing children's special interests. I also spoke at Teachers Talk Connect on understanding behaviour as communication and choosing connection over correction.

My teaching philosophy

My approach is neuro-affirming, strengths-based and deeply person-centred. I believe in connection before correction, because children learn best when they feel safe, understood and valued. I create calm, predictable and engaging sessions tailored to each child’s unique learning style, interests and strengths. Confidence is is something we build together, step by step. I gently weave emotional literacy and sensory regulation strategies into academic learning, recognising that wellbeing and progress go hand in hand. Education should fit the child, not the other way around. Above all, I want every child to leave sessions feeling capable, confident and proud of who they are.
